Many people are unaware that Allandale in Austin, Texas helped to pioneer modern air conditioning systems. In fact, twenty two neighborhood homes were part of a experimental project between 1954-1955 that was conducted by the University of Texas and the National Association of Home Builders. In this experiment 22 single story homes were built and designed using different AC manufactures, insulation and design elements. They named the homes according to the AC manufactures such as Carrier, Trane, Lennox and Ge. My personal home was called the “Lennox” and the entire community of 22 homes was named the “Air Conditioned Village.”
Today all 22 homes still remain and provide an interesting piece of history to this beautiful neighborhood with large lots and many ranch and mid century style homes.
